How to Prevent Jewelry Inventory from Tarnishing

Keeping your jewelry clean and tarnish free can save you a lot of time and money. Similarly, preventing tarnish from forming on your jewelry is an easier task than removing it. As they always say, “prevention is better than cure” that is why as a jewelry seller, you should be able to devise a way to keep your jewelry clean and spotless.

For retailers or manufacturers of wholesale fashion jewelry, storing your inventory in a cool dry place away from the sunlight is a must. Proper caring for jewelry and purchasing anti tarnish items can protect not only your inventory but also your profit. If you are a reseller and you order your inventory in large bulks it is important to store your jewelry in such a way that it will still look good even after a longer period of time.

What causes tarnishing?

Unfortunately, tarnishing on jewelry is almost an inevitable occurrence with any kind of metal except in platinum or gold. Tarnish is the result of the chemical reaction between the metal in the jewelry and the sulfur in environment. Jewelry that is left out in the open can accumulate tarnishes than those that are kept in acid free, closed container.

The rate and the color of tarnish can vary widely depending on the kind of metal used in the jewelry and the environment where it is located. Sterling jewelry can tarnish more quickly than those that is made from pure silvers or gold. High temperature and high humidity are known to speed up the discoloration of jewelry so it will be helpful to consider these factors when deciding on your store location and display cases.

How to Prevent Tarnishing?

While tarnishing can never be completely prevented, you can still do things to slow down the discoloration process on your wholesale fashion jewelry. Keeping your inventory sparkling and bright makes it easier to sell and will attract more customers.

As much as possible, store your jewelry in a cool dry place such as inside a glass display or plastic containers. This is especially true for high value jewelry.

Putting anti-tarnish papers in your jewelry protects precious metals from tarnishing that can diminish their value. Look for non-toxic anti-tarnish strips to make sure that these are safe for the metals and gemstones of your jewelry. This measure will help reduce the gases and humidity in the environment thus preventing tarnishes from forming on metals.

Cleaning your jewelry with a cotton cloth or polishing cloth will also help protect your jewelry from discoloration and tarnishing. Wipe away dust or grimes from your jewelry before storing them away after a tradeshow or parties.

The way you care for your jewelry can be reflected on your products and display. Make sure that your customer will only see the best of your inventory every time they purchase on your jewelry store. Aside from that, it will also be beneficial for you and your customers if you also advise them on how they can keep their jewelry collection from tarnishing quickly.
